The meltemi fills in by noon.
From late June to early September a dry north-northwesterly sweeps the Aegean. Force 4 to 6, sometimes more: cool on the skin, loud in the rigging, and it piles the sea into short white-topped hills that send our boats south at eight knots.

The wind sets the timetable.
Most July days go roughly like this. Nobody checks the time.
- 07:00
Swim before breakfast
The water is glass. Someone is already off the bow with a mask.
- 09:30
Anchor up
Coffee in the cockpit while the skipper reads the sky over Naxos.
- 12:00
The wind fills in
Sails up, engine off. Eight knots south, spray on the deck.
- 14:30
Lunch in the lee
Salad, cheese, cold watermelon, a long swim in a quiet bay.
- 18:00
Ashore
Tender to the village, then up to the chora as the light goes amber.
- 21:00
Dinner
The wind drops, the boat goes still, the harbour lights come on.
Notes from the quay.
- Wind · 14 Jul 2027How to read a meltemi morningFlat water at seven does not mean a flat day. Three signs our skippers check before they decide where the boat will sleep.

- Anchorages · 2 Jul 2027Kleftiko before nineThe pirate caves on the southwest corner of Milos, before the day boats arrive. Go early, go by tender, go quietly.

- Galley · 21 Jun 2027The chickpeas that cook all night on SifnosRevithada goes into a clay pot on Saturday night and comes out of a wood oven on Sunday at noon. We moor in Kamares to be there for it.

Drop anchor as the wind goes down.
By seven the meltemi eases off. The water turns to hammered brass, someone dives from the bow, and the galley sends up grilled octopus with a cold Assyrtiko.
